The principal causes of hemorrhoids are too much straining during bowel movements, caused by constipation, and sometimes extended periods of diarrhea. In some people especially women constipation can occur due to water retention from pre-menstrual syndrome. Hypertension especially portal hypertension also causes hemorrhoids, this is due to the reason that the connection between the portal vein and the vena cava. Other factors leading to rectal vein pressure is obesity and pregnancy, and vitamin E deficiency.

Hemorrhoids look like a swelling or inflammation of the veins in the rectal area. Medically hemorrhoids have been described as “cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the junction of the rectum and anus. Some times “Perianal hematoma” is misdiagnosed as hemorrhoids. Eating healthy foods such as cereals, eating more fiber rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, drinking more water, exercising and improving ones posture are some of the ways one can prevent hemorrhoids.

How long hemorrhoids last depends on the severity of it and what type of treatment one does. In some people change of diet and lifestyle coupled with “hydrotherapy” which is when warm water is used during bath which causes the vessels around the rectal regions to be relaxed, will be enough to cure it. Other treatments include topical treatments such as “cinchocaine” or “pramocaine. Other forms of pain relievers’ like “phenylephrine” and other topical ointments such as “witch hazel” should do the job. Various types of surgery are also done in extreme cases to get rid of Hemorrhoids.
